What is a Patient Participation Group?

This is a group of patients working with a practice to:

Contribute to the continuous improvement of services
Foster Improved communication between the practice and its patients.
Help patients to take more responsibility for their health
Provide practical support and help to implement change
Each group determines its own activities according to the needs of the community and the practice itself
Patient participation Groups work by building a relationship between the practice and its patients that breaks down barriers and shares information
Patient Participation Groups can develop to influence the wider NHS

We aim to gather around a hundred patients from as broad a spectrum as possible to get a truly representative sample. We need young people, workers, retirees, people with long term conditions and people from non-British ethnic groups.

It is important you understand that this group will not be a way of complaining about the services we provide or the treatment you are receiving. If you have a complaint about this you must follow the usual procedure.

The information you supply us will be used lawfully, in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998. The Data Protection Act 1998 gives you the right to know what information is held about you and sets out rules to make sure that this information is handled properly.

To reach an agreement on what issues need to be discussed we developed a patient survey that was carried out between 29th November 2011 - 9th January 2012. We received 314 completed surveys from as many patients or Carer's as possible. It was noted that we would have preferred to get more patients views however due to time restraints we were unable to do this.

The survey was advertised through our website, in the surgery reception area, and on all patients prescription printed at the surgery OR requested via our website. Please click Website Hits to see our website usage stats. (please note this opens as a word document).

The survey results were then published on-line and put up in reception for all patients to view.

As our patient reference group is a virtual group we contacted all of our PRG via emails to discuss the results.

The following concerns where raised:

1.Booking appointments online should be looked in to and we should have this facility

2.Booking appointments in advance is not easy enough.

3.Telephone service is not efficient enough.

4.Booking an appointment with a Doctor of your choice is difficult.

We will now decide as a group which of these points we feel needs to be addressed first.

You will notice from these results that the first point that will be looked in to will be 'booking appointments online'.

This is now being discussed with the partners of the surgery and the system support suppliers (Vision), to find out how this can be implemented.

To ensure that our PRG is representative of our registered patients we have sent out invitations to patients selected at random who fit a category that is not yet represented to join our group.

We sent invitations on 19th October 2011 & 2nd February 2012.
